51st State? Instead of Cozying to Trump, Canada Should Chart an Independent Anti-Monopoly Path

It sure didn’t take long for Hurricane Trump to make landfall. Less than a month after the U.S. election, the president-elect announced his intention to impose 25% tariffs on all products from Mexico and Canada along with higher penalties on Chinese imorts.

Trump’s feverish flip-flops during his first term in office are the stuff of legend, but that doesn’t mean threats like this shouldn’t be taken seriously. Regardless of whether or not these tariffs are implemented, the announcement is a sharp indication of where the incoming executive branch stands.

How the US and Israel Destroyed Syria and Called it Peace

The story is simple. In stark violation of international law, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his ministers claim the right to rule over seven million Palestinian Arabs. When Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands leads to militant resistance, Israel labels the resistance “terrorism” and calls on the U.S. to overthrow the Middle East governments that back the “terrorists.” The U.S., under the sway of the Israel Lobby, goes to war on Israel’s behalf.

Some Clarity on Imperialism Today

The arguments embroiling the left on the nature of imperialism, over whether Peoples’ China or Russia is capitalist or imperialist, whether the pink tide in Latin America is a socialist trend, whether the BRICS development is an anti-imperialist movement, and so forth, are becoming more and more heated as they proceed further and further into the academic weeds.

War Propaganda and the Fall of Syria

The rapid fall of the Syrian Arab Republic government was both a shock and a catastrophe for that region and for the world. It was incomprehensible that the state which withstood a sustained attack since 2011 from the United States, Israel, Turkey and other NATO members, and Gulf monarch states such as Saudi Arabia, would collapse so swiftly. The defeat was political, not military. There was surprisingly little actual fighting on the battlefield.
