Historical forgetfulness in Eastern and Southern Europe

The FIR has repeatedly spoken out in clear terms against the rewriting of the history of anti-fascist resistance and the rehabilitation of Nazi criminals and collaborators as “freedom fighters”, as has been practiced in recent years, particularly in the Baltic republics.

This year, too, a march of the “friends of Latvian SS-veterans” took place in Riga in mid-March on National Day under massive police protection. Obviously, the Latvian state wanted to prevent anti-fascists from articulating themselves publicly against this form of rewriting history, as in previous years. The government and the media claimed that anyone who opposed this SS veterans’ march is a “partisan of Putin”, denouncing not only the minority of Russian origin in Latvia, but also anti-fascist Latvians.

25 years ago: NATO's war of aggression against Yugoslavia

Nobody, criticizing the Russian Federation’s military aggression against Ukraine today, should forget, NATO waged the first war of aggression in Europe after the Second World War. On March 24, 1999, NATO forces began bombing Yugoslavia without an UN mandate. It was the alliance’s first combat mission in Europe and the first war deployment of the German armed forces since 1945.

NATO used the nationalist conflicts in the separation of the various states and regions of the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as a pretext. With the active participation of the FRG government, the secession of Slovenia and Croatia was pursued, later Bosnia-Herzegovina and other republics. The multi-ethnic constitution of the respective regions was now nationalistically superimposed on violent areas of conflict. The Serbian province of Kosovo became a particular area of conflict, where Western states supported the military forces of the Albanian UÇK against Serbia’s state authority, which, among other things, carried out terrorist attacks on Serbian police stations. In the summer of 1998, there was a civil war in Kosovo, for which the OSCE attempted to broker a ceasefire. US diplomat Richard Holbrooke traveled to the country as a representative of the OSCE to monitor compliance with the ceasefire. At the same time, the USA was planning military intervention against Yugoslavia, while the Europeans once again invited representatives of the Yugoslav central government and the Albanian UÇK to Paris for negotiations in February 1999. Instead of talks, the Albanian negotiator Hashim Thaci, later “President of the Republic of Kosovo”, blocked any agreement.

European states doubled arms imports in past five years, SIPRI says

European states imported almost double the amount of arms in 2019 to 2023 compared to 2014 to 2018, a leading conflict think-tank said on Monday, as Ukraine emerged as the largest European arms importer after the invasion by Russia in 2022.

European imports grew by 94% between 2019 and 2023 compared to 2014 to 2018, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said in a statement. Ukraine was the fourth largest importer in the world between 2019 to 2023, after at least 30 states supplied military aid to Ukraine from February 2022.

Sick, and Sick of It All

And our little pains to remind us of the indescribable pain of the savage killing and dismemberment of innocent children and adults in Gaza and many other places by U.S. weapons produced in clean factories by people just doing their jobs and collecting their pay at “defense” contractors Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Pfizer, etc. Abstraction is the name of the game as human bodies are torn to pieces “over there” and the obscene profits are transferred at the computer terminals day and night.
